What’re U looking for!?
2024.5.18 - 6.23 介末 Art&Craft Gallery 上海市长宁区武夷路49弄CBC大厦3FA solo exhibition by Japanese ceramic artist Tomoya Sakai will be held at our gallery, featuring 113 remarkable works.
Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1989, Sakai graduated from the Department of Ceramics at Nagoya University of the Arts and later completed advanced studies at the Tajimi City Pottery Design and Technical Center.
He is currently based in Seto, Aichi, where he creates ceramic sculptures using his highly refined wheel-throwing techniques.
Sakai’s works are composed of fragmented images of memory, drawing inspiration from nature, architecture, animation, and film.
Known for their bold forms and vivid colors, his pieces have attracted attention not only from the ceramic world but also from the contemporary art scene.
“We live in an information society.
Amid the flood of data, important memories sink into the unconscious.
Through clay and the wheel, I search for those hidden images that dwell deep within the mind.
These are shared images among us, and I hope my works allow viewers to feel art itself—
and to recall those precious memories that have begun to fade.”
Sakai’s works were selected for the Taiwan International Ceramics Biennale in 2020,
and he received the Silver Prize at the 12th International Ceramics Competition Mino in 2021.
His works have been collected by institutions such as the Gyeonggi Ceramic Museum (Korea)
and the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum (Taiwan).
